Bleeding Edge TV 178: iMac RAM Upgrade On The Cheap!

Filed in Technology 25 comments

video.gearlive.com – While the release of the newly redesigned aluminum and glass iMac have been fantastic, the fact that they ship with just 1 GB of RAM by default isn’t so exciting. We show you how to upgrade the RAM in the iMac at a far less expensive price than you would have to pay Apple to do it.

I think you got ripped off. I got my RAM from a different website, 4GB was only $120. Much less than your $229 purchase.

dude, srsly, you´re funny and all but should not give technical advice.
first laying the display on hard surface without putting something soft under it, then “experimenting” around and pulling needlessly on latches when you should just get a pair of pliers (made of plastic) to pull the RAM out.
had to stop at the point when you said you had to stop the camera after twenty minutes…
so very kindergarden…
high tech and good intentions are no good bed fellows…

I would suggest you scrap this video and re-record it without the advise on removing ram with screwdriver – ARE YOU SERIOUS???!!!!!??? Also, the fact that the video is filled with goof-ups doesn’t do too well for your cred. This is a very amateur production and you need to rehears first if you’re serious!

No mention of grounding yourself to avoid electrostatic discharge and frying the RAM – that’s not too clever

Clearly, you (Migwit15) either have a different iMac than he does, or the information pabsw192 gave about his iMac is incorrect. An iMac that says 800 MGz will require 800 MHz ram. Migwit15′s iMac may only require 667 MHz ram, and should work with either 667 MHz or 800 MHz ram.

as my imac’s spec shows:

Speed:667 MHz

Manufacturer:0xAD00000000000000

You cannot install 667 MHz RAM in your iMac. You are right that 667 MHz will not feel any slower to the user than 800 MHz, but the computer is just not compatible. 800 MHz means that the processor reads / writes to the ram at a maximum of 800 Million Times Per Second. If you put 667 MHz ram into the computer, the processor will try to read and write faster than the ram can handle. Motherboards check the ram speed before starting the computer to avoid errors, so chances are it just won’t start.

It does. I fucked up my MaxBook inserting new RAM – they took it, repaired it, brought it back to me in a matter of days for free :)

it does not void warranty. But if you damage the imac, applecare will NOT cover the cost of repairs.
