How do I get a free SIP or VOIP Account to use on my laptop?

Filed in Technology 4 comments

I have a laptop that I want to basically make a cell phone. I always have Wi-Fi so VoIP/SIP seems like the best option. I want to be able to have free calls to landlines and other softphones. Do you know a service that would allow me to do this? (It usually doesn’t matter, but I am running linux Ubuntu 8.04)

Try X-lite for linux. I use it with my Onesuite VoIP account. Onesuite is SIP based unlike Skype which has its own protocol and that means you can set it up on SIP devices or SIP based softphones.

Onesuite service is not free though, well even Skype or Yahoo Voice isn’t free either. Onesuite to Onesuite call is free and Onesuite to landline will cost you 2.5 cents to a US number and 1.9 cents to a Canadian number.
