Apple MacBook Pro Spring 2010 ( 15″ Model , core i7 )

Filed in Technology 25 comments

In a widely anticipated move, Apple has finally updated its MacBook Pro line of notebook computers with Intel’s latest chips and several other improvements across the board. Both the 15 and 17-inch models are now available with a Core i5 chip as standard and the i7 as an option. Although the 13-inch model still uses a Core 2 Duo processor, Apple has seen fit to increase the base RAM configuration to 4GB on all models and bump the hard drive and SSD options. Replacing the Nvidia 9400M and 9600M GT cards of previous gen models is the GeForce GT 320M and 330M, with a choice of graphics memory options. The 15 and 17-inch MacBooks will use Nvidia’s Optimus technology to switch between the on-package Intel HD integrated graphics and the discrete GPU for a healthy boost in battery life. Apple quotes a ten hour runtime for the 13-inch model and from eight to nine hours on the larger two. The 15-inch model also gains the option of a higher resolution screen with either glossy or matte coatings: 1680 x 1050 pixels against the standard 1440 x 900. All other features are pretty much the same, as is the starting price for each model: $1199 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro, $1799 for the 15-inch version and $2299 the 17-inch behemoth. The new notebooks will start shipping within 24 hours, according to Apple’s store.

    @nicholsml
    My favorites are Shogun and Rome. Shogun just had the best atmosphere and actually felt like Total War but real time battles in Rome were a lot better.

    I’m currently downloading the Crysis demo and will test it later tonight.

  • nicholsml

    @Molo9000 BTW I love all of the Total War games. Rome is my favorite, but I like them all.

    @Molo9000 I really don’t want to back an forth with you on this. I watched the video by KadMac25 and I doubt his “Medium” claim, because the textures are low res and his FoV has stuff in the background popping in and out. Looks more like low detail. He opens up his options in game but you can’t actually read any of it. I can make my laptop last a couple of days using sleep and hibernation, does that mean my laptop has 48 hours of battery life? Your argument is irrelevant.

    @nicholsml
    There is a video of Crysis running on medium settings on a new 13″ MBP here on utube. (uploader is KadMac25)
    Haven’t tested it myself though. The only game I’ve tested so far is Empire:Total War and that ran pretty well.

    In my experience Apple is pretty honest about battery life. Couldn’t test the full battery life yet but my MBP has now been on for almost 2 hours (surfing and coding @ medium brightness) and I still have 79% charge left. My guess is that 9hours are realistic.

  • nicholsml

    @Molo9000 First off, you can’t run crysis on medium settings with a 320 and still achieve 30+FPS unless you do some tweaking that would be considered cheating. Also the difference between hybrid and integrated isn’t expensive, but the performance gain is considerable. Also almost every device (including Mac’s) that advertise 10 hour battery life, actually get about 60% of stated life.

  • Molo9000

    @nicholsml
    The 320 isn’t a high end graphics card, but it’s the fastest integrated graphics chip u can buy today. 10hours of battery life out of a 13″ notebook that can also run crysis on medium settings is pretty awesome.

    god damn it he talks fast

  • dodow1234

    why is it each time apple make a new product I always feel an urge or desire or even obligation to buy some, even though I don’t actually need it. :(

    Maybe it’s the power of the hype

    @rcoffie

    Intel, after $800 Million in law suite costs for antitrust and patent violations still hasn’t learned to play nice.

  • dinnerandashow

    Well, at least it has the new Nvidia GPU.

  • rcoffie

    The reason the 13″ doesn’t have the i5 or i7 is due to the fact that intelsat lisencing agreement doesn’t allow it, it say if u hve any of their new core technoloy the computer has to have their graphics card the 4500mhd, if u haven’t notice ALL i5 and i7 computers have including the macbook pros

  • nicholsml

    The m11x did graphics switching long before Apple. Sure you had to hit a switch but they did that so you could decide when to use it.

    Just now getting I5′s and I7′s? Also the geforce 320 is a budget graphics card, and for the price of these new Macbooks, they should have 360′s or better. Only a fool would buy one of these.

    @triptik10 You still didn’t spell “designed” correctly… Oh boy.

  • triptik10

    @benevans192 Desinged, that’s why I love spell check,

  • zeth006

    @JanBlazicek Will look forward to it, hehe. I’m debating waiting for Asus’ UL30JT or getting a MBP 13. It’s $1,049 after rebates on another website. The only drawback is having to install crosstour just so I can use OneNote and possibly buying Windows just so I can take advantage of any future Windows-only software I might come across.

  • JanBlazicek

    @zeth006 Too much to say, too little space. Will pm you in a moment. :)

  • zeth006

    @JanBlazicek Really? Ok, now you’ve got me interested. How do you know it’s getting worse and worse? Mind posting a few details?

  • JanBlazicek

    @zeth006 Which honestly sucks at Apple. It still is my machine of choice, but those machines (talking laptops) are getting worse and worse with every release.

  • triptik10

    I was informed by apple that the MBP is desing in the USA but assembled all over the world. Makes me a little nervious. I just hope I don’t get a MBP that was put together by someone who is not qulified.

  • PolloKevin

    I have a 2009 Mbp I’ll just wait to buy a new mac after they update these :)

  • Achiliesguy21

    @kor34ndog its a business strategy to cut costs for the labor. . .

  • zeth006

    Who gives a shit where stuff’s made. Quality is dependent on the company’s quality control processes.

  • benevans192

    @kor34ndog It was DESIGNED in California, and MADE and China. That goes for all apple products!

  • kor34ndog

    i got a ipod touch 3rd gen, on my ear phone it says its made in China and i bought it at the apple store in hawaii o_O does that mean my ipod is made in china too or only macs and syht are made in calli?

  • Calvinwiresner

    Yeah I agree he slammed the cover… my local electronic store is selling the 15 inches Core 2 Duo 2.8 clock for $1,400 ….so I wonder if it is a good idea to get the old one rather than this 2.6 speed???
