MacBook Pro 13″ vs. MacBook Pro 15″ Core i5 Boot Time

Filed in Technology 25 comments

Specs: Core i5 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia 330M 256MB, Intel X-25M G2 80GB. This video shows how long the superdrive takes to initialize which I noticed in one of my other videos. Feel free to drop comments or questions in the comments box and I will get back to you. Also check out my other videos for gaming benchmarks, and load balancing tests.

my 13″ 2.4 C2D april 2010 MBP boots alot faster then your 13″ if not in the same time as your 15″

  • mefouryou

@MelleHofman83 This has been specified on both machines, with no change to the new 15″. It still takes 6 seconds for the SuperDrive to wake up.

  • MelleHofman83

I would suggest him to specify the hard-drive at start up disk on both machines. Chances are it’ll be a tie.

@gpjkoo The main generator of heat in a notebook is generally the processor under normal use, or the GPU when gaming. SSD’s and HDD’s generate very small amounts of heat, with the SSD generating less than a regular HDD.

  • gpjkoo

What is the main generator of heat in a notebook? Would it be the processor, or if you get a spinning hard drive? would getting a SSD rather than a HDD noticibly affect the amount of heat generated?

  • mefouryou

@vladibg66 It’s hard to say. the 13″ is a smaller enclosure with mostly the same parts stuffed inside with 1 fan. The 15″ is a larger enclosure allowing the parts to spread out a bit, and there are 2 fans. However the 15″ also adds a discrete graphics card. They’re probably the same in terms of temperatures.

  • vladibg66

@mefouryou Oh… probably forgot to mention that my old HP is heating up extremely fast and it’s pretty hot quite frankly…that’s reason I mentioned it. Last question: Do you think the 13” generates less heat than the 15”?

  • mefouryou

@vladibg66 You’re comparing a quad core, 4GB RAM, discrete graphics machine to an old HP in terms of heat? I think it’s just you with the heat issue. It’s hotter when you’re typing because you obviously have an app running. When no programs are running it’s 45-50 because there’s no programs running. It’s called idle temperature.

@mefouryou Thanks for clarifying me! So you’re getting a super powerful computer that would make multitasking even faster and more efficient and will also save you battery life.

  • mefouryou

@JSantana319 Threading has to do with processes, or jobs entering a processor. It means that the processor core can handle two processes at one time. So in the case of the MacBook’s Core i5′s and i7′s, these are dual core chips, but with hyper-threading enabled which means each core can handle 2 things at once, therefore making this chip behave like a quad core. Hyper-threading is an Intel technology that has been implemented in the past on single core processors as well.

  • JSantana319

@mefouryou Hey, what does threading mean? I’ve heard abou itt so many times, but can you specify exactly what it means?

  • mefouryou

@vladibg66 The difference between a Core i5 and a Core 2 Duo is huge. First you have hyper-threading on each core making it act like a quad core, second it has turboboost which will bump it up to 3GHz during load times, and third it has much quicker access to RAM through QPI.

@ShakeAndBakeGuy Light web-browsing on 50% brightness, the battery lasts about 8.5 hours.

  • ShakeAndBakeGuy

@mefouryou Awesome. Also, with light web browsing with the Intel HD graphics, how has battery life been?

  • mefouryou

@ShakeAndBakeGuy The graphics switching is seamless, you don’t even know it happens. It’s on by default in Windows, and it turns itself on in Mac OS X whenever I run heavy applications. The turbo boost is working flawlessly as well. The clock speed goes up by 3 increments. 2.66, 2.8, 3.0 or something like that, as it needs to. Again, no user interaction required.

  • ShakeAndBakeGuy

I’m really considering purchasing the i5 MacBook Pro. The price point is a lot better because I thought I’d be forced to purchase the $1999 model to get a Core i5. I have the 2.4 MacBook aluminum so I’m upgrading from a similar setup as you : )
Btw, how is the graphics switching and Turbo Boost working? Is it consistent?

  • mefouryou

@Scarth07 I would recommend getting the 15in Core i5 if you desire the gaming performance, the multi-tasking performance, the larger screen, and you have the money. If you’re looking for a word-processing, web browsing laptop that’s highly portable, the 13in is probably the right choice for you.

  • petergelderplom

@jennyl6789 also the core i5 and core i7 isnt really quad core

  • Scarth07

What would you suggest to get: new 13inch model or basic 15inch core i5?

  • mefouryou

@jennyl6789 If portability is a major concern a might suggest the 13″ model, provided horsepower is not a major concern.

  • TECHBUGTv

Man that was a very nice quick startup from your 15′ MBP. When I get my 2.4 Ghz MBP i know it wont be as fast since I wont have the SSD inside, but thats still pretty sweet!

  • mefouryou

@kakejelly Quick yes, but not as quick as it could be ;)

  • kakejelly

as if you care if apple patches the issue or not…. the time it takes to start up is still lightning quick!

  • jennyl6789

i dont know which one to buy i like quad core but i also want it to be portable since im in college!! which one do you think would be ok with me?

  • mefouryou

@newtechfan As stated in the videos, the i5′s and i7′s are dual core, Hyper Threaded processors, providing 4 functional cores, thereby to the operating system, being a quad core processor.
