Complete video at: fora.tv Ge Wang, co-founder of Smule, plays The Legend of Zelda theme song on an iPhone using the expressive social media app Ocarina. —– Due to their mobility, intimacy, and sheer strength in numbers, mobile phones have become much more than simply “miniature computers,” increasingly serving as personal and “natural” extensions of ourselves. Therein lies immense potential to reshape the way we think and do, and especially in how we engage one another socially. This presentation explores the iPhone as a unique platform for creating new expressive, social mediums. As case studies, we demonstrate and examine how Smule’s “social sonic artifacts” (eg, Sonic Lighter, and Ocarina) were able to take full advantage of the iPhone’s intersection of technologies (multitouch, powerful mobile CPU and GPU, full audio pipeline, GPS/location, persistent data connection via 3G/Edge) to provide a unique experience that is at once expressive on a personal level, and social on a global scale. — Emerging Communications Conference Ge Wang received his BS in Computer Science in 2000 from Duke University, PhD in Computer Science (advisor Perry Cook) in 2008 from Princeton University, and is currently an assistant professor at Stanford University in the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). His research interests include interactive software systems (of all sizes) for computer music, programming languages, sound synthesis and analysis, new performance

@mingwaikan not really cuz a key board is actually an instrument but this is just a nifty phone app.

  • mingwaikan

Ye but its a ocarina, its like saying don’t play the keyboard, play the actual piano.

  • mingwaikan

    brilliant

  • mingwaikan

Whats up with all the negative comments? This is such an amazing app for a phone. I for one would of never thought, “hey lets go and learn how to play the ocarina” but now its on my phone i can play a tune whenever i feel like it.

  • SonGanon

@passive101 for the touch the sound just goes off when u press the button. so u dont need a mic.

    @bobwashear08
    yea

  • Cody0Snow

i think people should just learn to play the actual instruments and not half ass it with a cell phone lol

  • MegaUltraChicken5000

It needs a microphone to work.

  • Gusdor

Social media, urgh what a douchebag.

  • bobwashear08

  • ecommpoland

    this video is poor marketing!!!

  • 123stevevw

that is a brilliant presentation by any means. Defining the reasons why, what the app is good for, why they made it, how it works, a demo, a little humour, a video etc etc, faultless presentation IMO. Oh and he’s pretty useful with the Ocarina app too!
