I know what you mean about the expensive, characterless cracker-boxes. In an episode of Holmes on Homes, they revealed a lot of what’s wrong with new houses. So your investment is better made by buying an old house and renovating it as you like.

Myself, if I had Archie’s house, all I would update is the electricity so it has a larger threshold. I’m happy with the rest and would hope the paint kept intact. Though, who knows…maybe I’d even make the house look simpler than it already does.

I know. And imagine what Archie’s house would be worth today? It only needs updating, painting, probably a new bathroom and kitchen. New houses these days are expensive, characterless cracker boxes.

I wouldn’t sell that house. Its too hard to find homey houses like that anymore. You have to buy one of those newfangled new ones and renovate it so its dressed-down and homey, and the insulation just isn’t as good. Too many older houses are torn-down. Their only need for improvement is the bathroom so its mold-free.
