For years the 1989 quake was said to have been a 7.1, but I have heard the figure 6.9 thrown around in most recent years.

I was in Mexicali Baja California a couple weeks ago, and there was a pretty big earthquake I was awaken from, they say it was a 5.9 but I think it was like a 6.3, it was pretty big.

Note the small death toll. Sixty total or so, both in SF, and in LA in 94–and in two structures, a freeway in SF (okay, Oakland) and one apartment building in Northridge.
